Private label injection pens: what OEM and ODM actually cover

Published 4 Οκτωβρίου 20265 min read

OEM and ODM are often used as if they mean the same thing. Here is what each one involves on a pen device project, and what you should confirm in writing before sampling.

Private label on a pen device is not one service — it is a stack of decisions. Understanding which parts of the product you are changing, and which you are inheriting from an existing platform, keeps a first project on schedule.

OEM: your brand on a proven platform

In the OEM model, the device platform already exists. You apply your brand to it. In practice that means three things: printed branding, dose scale marking and packaging design. The mechanism, dimensions and internal geometry stay as documented.

This is the faster and lower-risk route. You are not re-qualifying a mechanism, only a print plate and a carton. For most first private-label launches, it is the route that gets a product to market without an engineering programme behind it.

ODM: changing the product itself

ODM goes further: the housing shape, colour family, grip, clip and dose window can be redeveloped. That opens the door to a genuinely differentiated product, but it also means new tooling, longer validation and a sample cycle measured in rounds rather than days.

ODM makes sense when the product itself is the differentiator in your market. If your market competes on service, price and range breadth instead, OEM on an existing platform usually delivers more per unit of effort.

The three customizations to confirm in writing

Across our pen range, the customization options available as standard are logo printing, scale marking and packaging design. Whatever your supplier offers, get these confirmed before sampling:

  • The exact position and size of the printed logo, and how it interacts with the clip and dose window.
  • The dose scale increments you need, and the print colour against the housing colour you have chosen.
  • Whether the packaging design includes the carton only, or the insert and any retail-facing elements.
  • Which colour options are standard and which require a minimum run per colour.

Colour is a supply-chain decision, not a design decision

Every additional colour in a range is an additional SKU to forecast, stock and clear. A model offering eleven standard colours is flexible, but launching all eleven at once is rarely sensible. Start with the two or three that match your existing brand palette and add from there.

What to send in a private-label brief

A brief that answers these questions will get you a usable quotation on the first pass: target market, intended annual volume, which existing model you are basing the product on, required colours, dose configuration, logos and artwork files, packaging scope and your required launch date.
